Wenn die Berliner Künstler-Kartografin Valeska Peschke sich die Landschaften auf scheinbare harmlose Art erwandert, dann geschieht dies mit skurrilen und unheimlichen Untertönen. Es geht nämlich, wie André Kubicek lakonisch schreibt, immer um „ein Ziel, das erreicht werden muss, um die Strapazen rechtfertigen zu können, jenseits von Würstechenbude und Mobiltoilette, die sie verharmlosen. Im Anstieg – schon ist Stimmengewirr zu vernehmen, die Fröhlichkeit des Gipfels, der Geruch vom Gegrilltem“ – zeichnet sich bereits der Abgrund ab. Einen Monat lang ist Peschke in ihrem Berliner Atelier gewissermassen im Geist der Situationisten in einer konstruierten Wohnsituation umhergeschweift. Dabei hat sie alle Strecken aufgezeichnet, die sie je gegangen ist: vom Schreibtisch zur Couch, von der Couch zum Fernseher, vom TV zum Büchergestell, von hier aus zum Telefon, etc. Auf einem in der Ausstellung ausgebreiteten Holzboden in der Größe ihres Zimmers sind nun alle Spuren ihrer Psychogeographie erfasst. Mit einer Wanderkarte können die Besucher von Atlas Mapping die unmittelbaren Wirkungen der Dinge erforschen, die – bewusst oder unbewusst – als geografisches Milieu auf das emotionale Verhalten der Künstlerin Einfluss nahmen. Guy Debord hat das Konzept des Umherschweifens 1958 als ein konstruktives Spielverhalten beschrieben, das sich dem klassischen Begriff der Reise und des Spaziergangs entgegenstellt. Urbane wie auch private Räume besitzen „ein psychogeograpisches Bodenprofil mit beständigen Strömen, festen Punkten und Strudeln, die den Zugang zu gewissen Zonen oder ihr Verlassen sehr mühsam machen“. Peschke hat mit der Kartierung ihrer Zimmerwanderung, die in den Markierungen der Höhepunkte des Mobiliars gipfelt, etwa 1795 und 2019, eine romantische Bewegung jenseits bekannter Kartografie vollzogen.

When the artist / cartographer Valeska Peschke from Berlin takes up her wanderings through the landscape in her seemingly harmless way, then there are still irreverent and eerie undertones about it. The issue, as André Kubicek writes, always concerns “a goal that must be reached in order to justify the hardship of the endeavor, irrespective of the trivializing snack booths and portable toilets along the way.” The upward climb itself – you can already make out the murmur of voices, the gaiety on the peak, the smell of barbecue – begins to reveal the contours of the abyss.
For one month Peschke is undertaking a dérive in her studio in Berlin in the spirit of a situationist in a constructed living situation. During that time, she recorded every path she moved along: from the desk to the couch, from the couch to the TV, from the TV to the bookshelves, from there to the telephone, and so on. A wooden floor the size of the room, spread out for the exhibition, shows all the traces of her psychogeography. The visitor to Atlas Mapping may use a map to explore the immediate effect of the things, which have – consciously or unconsciously — influenced the concept of “drifting around” as a constructive playful behavior, which is contrasted with the classic notion of journeying or taking a walk. In Debord’s terms, both urban and private spaces have “a psychogeographical floor profile with constant streams, fixed points and vortices, which make it difficult to access certain zones or to leave them.” By mapping her paths through her room, climaxing in the demarcation of the peaks of the furniture (1795 and 2019, for instance), Peschke has realized a romantic movement far removed from familiar cartography.
